The Itinery

1. Pablo Picasso: The Vollard Suit @Singapore Tyler Print Institute

The first-ever solo show by Pablo Picasso in Singapore, the Vollard Suit is a $2m exhibition of his rare and complete set of 100 etchings, aquatints and drypoints, made between 1930-37.

2. As Brutal As @La Libreria Gallery

In this solo exhibition, local artist Genevieve Chua explores themes of psychological horror and sexuality through pencil drawings on paper. Her evocative interpretations of light, texture and details invoke viewers to rethink their perceptions and conjure new experiences.

3. Azhanti High Lightning @Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts

Contemporary Asian society is constantly buffeted by change, often sudden, unexpected, affecting an individual or entire culture, and with lasting influence. Come face to face with change, evolution and inevitability in this dramatic and immersive installation artwork that fills an entire gallery space. With seven distinct parts and film-set type construction, the installation takes the viewer on a remarkable journey of sights and sounds, beginning with a large sculpture. Describing the spaces will be a series of room experiences that feature, among others, a 360-degree movie theatre.

4. Domestic Bliss: Exploring the Myth of the Happy Home @Sculpture Square (Chapel Gallery)

The concept of family and home is an enduring and powerful force in Asian society. But laid over this hallowed reverence is the material gloss of the modern era. An idealised model of the nuclear family has come to be at the centre of advertising images, superseding the complex and multi-generational family structures that traditional Asian families possess. Three contemporary Malaysian artists - Sharmiza Abu Hassan, Vincent Leong, and Chang Yoong Chia - have produced challenging, funny and thought-provoking explorations on family and domesticity for this group exhibition. Their installations present a fresh and stimulating take on domestic bliss.

5. Engraving the World: A Selection from the Chalcography Collection of the Louvre Museum, Zeng Fanzhi - Idealism and Their Permanent Collection (recommended for those who are interested to know more about Singapore and South-east Asian Art) @Singapore Art Museum

6. Streetworks: inside outside Yokohama @The Substation

A highlight of the International Triennale of Contemporary Art Yokohama 2005, the work of leading Australian video artists, Shaun Gladwell and Craig Walsh, hits the pavements of South East Asia.
While Walsh connects the gallery space to the outside urban environment, Gladwell works in reverse. In different ways both artists have produced work that generates a tension between gallery and the public street. Their emphasis on other opposing values is also highlighted in the exhibition that moves laterally around concepts of performance and documentation, high art and low art, sub-cultural and pop-cultural, staged and real.

(Housekeeping 2: The Welfare rep would like to commend the C2 class on their initiative this term in keeping the food chain unbroken! )

The inaugural Sandwich Pageant held last Thursday, 19/4/07, was a moderate success, with the especially creative sandwiches from those who remembered almost making up for the meagre participation. Mr Tan's colossal Hawaiian BUILDING won Most Appealing, Pow's 9-layer sandwich the Most Supersized, and Yeenseen's peanut-butter-apricot-squash was voted Most Ugly. Special mention goes to Karweng's Chocolate Sandwich, with the sandwich that was Most In Line With Coursework, Siewching's Most Unhygenic, Shum's Most Home-made, with homegrown ingredients, Charm's Most Initially Unappealing (but very delicious) Grape Sandwich, and of course, not forgetting Jun Hua's Most Un-Sandwich chicken pie.

The person who benefitted most was probably KarWeng, who got Pow's sandwich in the Sandwich Exchange. Pow reported that Claire's sandwich was delicious, and everybody loved Charm's Grape Sandwich. Mr Tan's Hawaiian Sandwiches were demolished within seconds.

Everybody had a lot of fun, completely forgetting that lessons were at hand, and most of us ended up being completely stuffed by the over supply of sandwiches, thanks to Pow. Everybody survived the sandwich meal. No casualties were reported despite the dubious sources from which the sandwiches were derived. (those with photographs are invited to upload!)

I just read about this news: The Toon Boom Animation Festival 2007 will be held in Singapore, can read more at this link. The competition period is from 2 April to 31 May. We have to use Toon Boom software to make a short animation (<2min). Teams are made of 3 members each. There will be public voting as well. Top team will win a 1 month internship with a studio in Canada. Is anyone interested in taking part?

Studio Care

Hi all, your j2 studio mistress here to post guidelines regarding maintenance of the STUDIOS, namely the Resource Centre, Media Room (j2's classroom-cum-cubicle) and the Drawing Room (j1's classroom and pantry).

General Guidelines:

1. All the colourful rags in the drawing room (near the windows) seem to be for painting purposes, so it'll be good for you people to bring clean rags next time, strictly for use in the pantry.

2. Return all resources (art history files, books and stationery) to their original places after use. [esp. in Resource Room]

3. Clear up all foodstuff, that means washing up and returning them back to the pantry in the appropriate places.

4. Please do try NOT to kick the walls near the computer tables in the resource room (footprint markings are increasingly visible).

5. Do not leave any of your belongings (sketches, printouts, assignments, even valuables) lying around in any of the rooms, please keep them away lest they get misplaced. You'll be doing a nice favour for the people on duty roster =)

6. (Only) at the end of the day, please switch off all lights, fans, air-conditioners and the PCs.

7. i have liased with my fellow j1 studio manager Jianliang to draw up a duty roster, in which you guys will pair up to clean up (i.e. sweeping, washing, arranging of tables/chairs) after your lessons. For j2s, please follow the arrangement done up earlier on for food-contribution.

8. For the pantry cabinets (just above the sink near the fridge), please take care to allocate the various foodstuufs in to the approprite places. Currently, the section on the left is for food in general, the right for eating utensils i.e. alum foil, cutlery, straws, ketchup and other toppings/flavourings (whatever you call them). Please ensure the place is kept organised.

1. Just a reminder, the sink near the fridge is strictly for food, washing eating utensils, while the other near the windows for washing of painting materials, so please do not place paintbrushes/paint/etc near the other pantry sink.

2. Remember to wash all painting materials immediately after use- don't leave the paint (esp. acrylic) to dry up on them. If you still need to use them for other occasions, do store your painting materials apprpriately, i.e. in Ziploc bags (will try to provide).

j2s
1. Try to keep the classroom area clean and free from litter during and after lessons- clear up unwanted food wrappers, biscuit crumps etc. Occasionally, get acquainted with chores like sweeping.

2. Make full use of your cubicle space (as constantly reiterated). That includes ensuring the cleanliness of your personal space. For those sharing cubicles, do remember to practise consideration to your friendly neighbour.

woohoo. that should be about all. hope all can cooperate to make our AEP environment a better place to live in =))

Dear C1 AEP students,

As instructed by the Supreme AEP Class Rep Zhu Chuan, I am posting this message to allow a democratic vote for what you want to eat (i.e. what you want the welfare reps to buy). Although, this is meant to be democratic, we still need to have some rules:

Firstly, the welfare reps have decided to patronize NTUC. This means that NTUC is our one and only supplier of food.

Secondly, the food we eat must be healthy (trans-fat free), and economical (no Kroc Cookies).

Thirdly, the "voting" has to be done on this blog because I do not have the authority to set up one in IVLE. Please respond using comments. In your comment, state your Name, and select your preferred food item from the list below. Each individual may only vote once and select one food item.

A Random Exhibition Visit

Exhibition at Plastique Kinetic Worms (of which I've forgotten its name)

Like many of the works presented in the Singapore Biennale which dealt with issues regarding beliefs in icons and myths, the artist here takes a similar approach in handling the issue of "myths", juxtopositioning the idea of photography with a certain literary work (which I've forgotten the name) and several historical elements. Photography succeeds in capturing the moment, more so than what the Impressionists tried to achieve, but with a heightened sense of realism that leads one to sometimes question the reality of the scene and the actuality of it in the photograph, as such, sometimes requiring both artist and viewer to take a leap of faith when perceiving the work. Disclaimer: My understanding of the work.

What I enjoyed was the presentation of the work (only the one in the main section). The main screen was a slideshow of photographs of an alldressedupin18thcenturyattire guy posing amidst the forest, with another man playing photographer with his tripod. There was a certain duality in perception that I quite liked of it, the idea of a photo with a photo.... which was further taken upon with placing the same camera and tripod found in the image in front of the screen in the middle of the exhibition space. Within the camera, was a small screen with the same photographs being projected onto it. (For a moment I had thought that the ancient looking camera was some high end projector that was projecting the images onto the big screen). On the right, were three videos being projected on to the wall. Each was a repetitive sequence of a strange looking vase that was presented as a temple, a huge ancient looking book, and the "alldressedup" man's hand nearing a flame and moving away from it. The interesting bit about the videos was that each had a static object (be it the vase, book, or flame), with its staticity re-emphasised with having a foam board cut-out of the individual objects shapes, resulting this objects not just having existed in the video, but also in the immediate environment of the gallery.

There were several woodboards with the images of these objects printed on, and the gallery sitter told me that I could put it up and put it down, but I couldn't quite see the point. Also, the piece presented in the next door space was quite irrelevant, if not troublesome to look at . Capturing several dark shots with streaks of light to present signs that look like letters in the alphabet, the artist then prints each one out and inverts them clockwise (or anti-clockwise), such that one has to re-orientate them to figure out the strange sentence he's trying to make. I gave up halfway, cos it's really quite annoying.

The most amusing bit about the exhibition though, was looking at the guestbook, and realising that a certain art teacher happened to be there on the same day too, and perhaps the one just before me- it was a good thing that I had come later, if not a parent teacher meet (with interrogation) would have occurred, especially when one has such notoriety as I do. Oh, and there was this cute looking painter with short hair flaring sideways and a very clean shaven face cleaning his works on the upper floor. His series of paintings were of dark cityscapes with streaks of pschedelic yellows, reds, whites and greens, painted in a subdued sort of expressive manner. He just looked at me and smiled a little when I walked up to take a look. I was too shy to say hi.

Lastly, I liked the nice aroma of curry and rotiprata in PKWorms, coming from the whole range of indian eateries residing just outside. Not many gallery spaces can boast of being able to smell yummy.

The Initiation Ceremony

hey everyone!

This is lovely - a big hug to yeenseen for the hardwork! To do your html efforts (something I remain extremely envious of) justice, I shall make a constructive post!

Remember the Initiation Ceremony for the J1s? Ms Kee asked us to plan a Snr-Jnr meeting, and your ever responsibility-shirking welfare rep shall attempt to make a proposal. In view of my nationality (the ever pragmatic Singaporean), I propose we make it an outdoor drawing session so we can do our Senior stuff and get some exciting drawing practice as well!

Date: Pending on the schedules of the various parties. Would be good if it could replace say, Monday's AEP lessons. Or we could take a whole Saturday.

Venue: Botanic Gardens - it's nearby (relative to school), and very conducive for picnics and other artyfarty stuff (and if our lessons are anything to show for it, this means eating and sleeping)

What we can do:
- Have a picnic! we can make this somewhat 'potluck', where snrs bring something (as a class) and juniors contribute something. Cheap version of STJ/JTS yah? Saving money is a very big part of AEP. Plus, food always facilitates the 'get to know each other' part of activities like this.

- Do our coursework research (for anyone that might potentially need flowers, grass, mosquitoes and more grass. And models.)
- Scheduled drawing sessions where everyone sits quietly and draws for a bit. Must look a bit more arty farty in the eyes of the public yah? (maybe the teachers could use this as a diagnostic test!)

- Play games. Frisbee is very good in the Botanic Gardens. This is where the Amazing , Awe-Inspiring Hwachong Frisbee Champion class played their maiden game. We might even kickstart an Aep Frisbee League. Or we could play other embarrassing ice breaking games. But of course, games are optional, seeing as to how we always manage to amuse ourselves somehow.
